first_imgA resource for veterans attending Clark College will get some community support Wednesday in a fundraising event in Hazel Dell. The evening of dinner and bingo will benefit the college’s Veterans Resource Center, which assists hundreds of Clark students each quarter. The center’s advisory board is organizing the money-raising effort. It starts at 6 p.m. at the 40 et 8 bingo hall, 7607 N.E. 26th Ave., on the south side of 78th Street. Individual tickets are $25.While the Veterans Resource Center opened in January 2014, Bingo for Vets is the first foray into community-provided support, Kelly Jones, the center’s manager, said.“No specific fundraising has been done,” Davis said.“About 340 students are using GI Bill benefits,” Davis, a retired Army sergeant major, said. “Everyone with GI Bill benefits has to come through the center.”“The GI Bill only covers so much,” noted Lisa Schauer, a volunteer who is helping the advisory board put on the event. At the resource center, veterans attending Clark “can borrow textbooks and get free tutoring,” Schauer said.“About 200 are in the pipeline for textbooks each quarter,” Davis said. But it’s not all about academic assistance.“Sometimes they need emergency dollars to keep them in school,” Schauer said.Other assistance goes to expenses such as child care and car repairs. The veterans advisory board also is a valuable resource, Davis said. Sometimes the board’s members are the people with the answer to the frequent question:“Do you know somebody who can help us with this?”last_img
