5th Annual Kenai River Spring Cleanup Wednesday And Friday

first_imgFacebookTwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享Scores of local, students, residents, and guides will be out cleaning up the shores of the Kenai River for the 5th annual Kenai River Spring Cleanup this Wednesday and Friday. To get involved you can call Mark Glassmaker at 907-398-6405 or visit their Facebook page by clicking here. Glassmaker: “Not just fishing line, we’ve found things like cell phones, rebar, with the river being low it’s amazing what you find. In 2014, from the first event itself, we collected 2,000 pounds of debris from the various locations such as Centennial, Swiftwater Park, up to Bing’s Landing. It’s amazing how it’s all accumulated.” Students are armed with gloves and garbage bags, and then supervised by volunteers who help keep children safe. Glassmaker: “We have volunteers that are with the program itself, and like a well-oiled machine, we help make sure that the children are safe and they are picking up what they need to from the river.”  Over the last 4 years students from the local area have removed over 12,000 pounds of debris from the banks of the Kenai River. Glassmaker says the event helps the young people foster stewardship and personal respect for the Kenai River. Event coordinator Cindy Glassmaker says the students are often baffled by the amount of garbage they collect in just two days.last_img read more
