Battery train enters passenger service

first_imgUK: The prototype Independently Powered Electric Multiple-Unit has entered trial passenger service on the Manningtree –Harwich branch, where it is scheduled to operate on weekdays between January 12 and February 13.The IPEMU comprises a Bombardier Electrostar Class 379 four-car 25 kV 50 Hz EMU which has been retrofitted with Valence Technology lithium iron magnesium phosphate batteries for off-wire use. It will be used to assess the potential for battery-powered trains to be used on non-electrified routes between electrified lines, or on branch lines which would be expensive to electrify. The data gathered will help to determine whether any future IPEMU should be a straight battery unit or an overhead-battery hybrid. The project is a collaboration between Bombardier, infrastructure manager Network Rail, operator Abellio Greater Anglia, innovation body FutureRailway and the Department for Transport. The partners expect that future IPEMUs would be designed from new rather than adapted from existing EMU designs, thus enabling optimisation to minimise energy consumption. However the project will also provide useful information for any proposed retrofit.‘We’ve made terrific progress with this project so far and seeing the battery-powered train in timetabled service is a huge step forward’, said Network Rail Principal Engineer James Ambrose. ‘After months of engineering and testing, the train is running just as we would like it. We’ll be using this six-week period to gather data on how it handles during passenger service – most travellers will recognise how quiet and smooth the ride is compared to a diesel-powered train.’last_img read more

Borough Tax Foreclosure Properties Up for Auction Friday

first_imgNavarre says the Kenai Peninsula Borough handles the proceeds from the auctions a little differently than most municipalities. Click here to access the auction packet. Auction registration will begin at 9:00 am, Saturday, October 24, in the Soldotna High School Auditorium and the action is scheduled to begin around 10:15. Those property owners can repurchase those properties through Friday. The auction packet shows 48 parcels up for auction from Nikiski to Seldovia. Originally over 70 parcels were listed. The auction packet notes that all properties are sold “as is” and that some parcels may currently be occupied, in which case purchasers would be responsible for resolving the occupancy issues.center_img Borough Mayor Mike Navarre says the borough holds the outcry auction each year in accordance with state statutes. FacebookTwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享The Kenai Peninsula Borough will hold a public outcry auction for a slew of tax foreclosure properties Saturday. Mayor Navarre: “They’ll be sold at the auction but the previous owners have the right to purchase them back if they’d like for, the taxes that are owed.” Navarre: “This decision was made a long time before I got here but what the borough does is we sell the properties, we collect the portion of the sales proceeds to pay the taxes owed on it and the remainder goes to the previous owner of records. So we don’t keep the excess above the taxes that the parcels were originally foreclosed on for.”last_img read more

Van Stratens run 1-2 in Oshkosh Stocks

first_imgOSHKOSH, Wis. (July 18) – Races don’t get much closer than this.Neither do the finishes. Justin Jacobsen grabbed the lead for the Total Power Sales IMCA Stock Car main Friday at Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway ahead of point leader John Heinz, Dylan Heilmann, Kevin Hebbe, Travis Van Straten and David Hoerning. Van Straten was hooked up and powered into the lead on lap seven. Contact with Heinz on the following lap brought out the caution with Heinz going to the back and Van Straten still the leader for the restart. Jacobsen, Barry Van Straten, Larry Karcz Jr. and Heilmann were now right behind. The Van Straten boys ran side-by-side for the lead with Travis inside and Barry outside for the rest of the race.Travis held the top spot for much of the way with Barry scored as the leader a couple times as they pulled away from the field. Karcz, Rod Snellenberger and Jacobsen ran together with Heinz coming from the back into contention again in fifth. A caution with three laps remaining bunched the field on the leaders. Barry again took the outside line with Travis holding inside. Snellenberger, Karcz and Heinz were wrapped in the race for third, which allowed the leaders to duke it out on their own. They were dead even at the line for the white flag with Travis gaining a slight edge in turn one.Barry stayed even again down the back and out of four, was able to get the bite up high to edge Travis at the line by a bumper for his first feature win of the season and first-ever at Oshkosh. The close victory was a bit of payback for Travis stealing one away from Barry at Seymour the past Sunday night. With a field of 40 Automotive Supply Company IMCA Modifieds on hand, it was tough to make the 20 car feature field. Sean Jerovetz caught Mike Mueller to win by half a car length. Steve Schneider raced to his fifth local Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod victory of the season after a mid-pack start.last_img read more
